I know I’m 3 years late...but this is the worst “explanation” of AWD/4WD I’ve ever seen. No wonder regular people don’t understand it.

As someone who wants an explanation of how something works to be as basic and non-technical as possible, what did they get incorrect?

For one, they didn’t even explain what 4wd is. Other than ‘a bunch of crazy levers and shit.’
Put simply, Awd is basically 4wd without low range transfer case.
I’d say CNET should stick to computers, but they’re not very at that either.

They can be funny as hell, though.

“Better than rear wheel drive OR EVEN front wheel drive!”
This always perplexes me. I’ve driven both types of vehicles in the snow, and if anything I felt like the FWD car was at a disadvantage.
If your car has 70% of its weight over the front axle, sure, it makes a difference.
But if your car is well balanced at all, there’s no inherent benefit to either layout except the normal traits of each.
Also, if you’re good you can easily recover from oversteer. Understeer is a matter of doing nothing and hoping you slow down enough before you go off a cliff.

Considering he didn’t stop talking for a solid five minutes that was surprisingly devoid of useful information. I did learn however that AWD cars NEVER EVER EVER understeer or oversteer.
